On Monday 23rd April, the Institute of Community Cohesion hosted a national conference on integration. The conference, held at a central London location, offered the opportunity to discuss with the Government’s approach to integration, which was published in February 2012.
Views about the riots in London and other cities seem to divide between those who see the cause as one of ‘basic criminality’ and those that are searching for a deeper meaning in which people have been motivated by some form of political or economic alienation. And rather predictably, this divides between those on the Left ant
those on the Right. I think this is far too simplistic.
Support for the Far Right is still growing and the threat to community cohesion, especially from the EDL, must be taken more seriously, warns iCoCo. A report by iCoCo shows that while the BNP failed to make headway in its target seats in 2010, its overall support was much greater than in the previous general elections.
The Prime Minister’s speech in Munich has generated considerable reaction, partly because of its tone but also the unintended but unfortunate timing, coinciding with the latest EDL march in Luton. The real issue, which the speech did not address, is where we go from here.
The British Council and iCoCo have today launched a new guide on tackling difference. The Intercultural Dialogue (ICD) online resource guide will, for the first time, give policy makers and practitioners around the world practical advice and good practice examples to support work on ICD.
We are delighted to announce the launch of the Take Part online resource directory. The directory is part of a national support package for the Take Part programme, which encourages communities and individuals to get involved in active citizenship activities and to share the learning from this involvement. It is a single source of information
for anyone interested in Take Part methodologies and the wider community empowerment and engagement agendas including the duty to involve and the duty to promote democracy.
